Description:

As a farmer, Joe understands the importance of hard work and the integrity one needs to build a good life. He desired to direct a scholarship award, based on character and citizenship, that will honor a student who exhibits those same characteristics. Joe established this fund in memory of his beloved wife, Clara. Together, they raised their family with the belief that faith, family and education was of highest value.

The Joe and Clara Smith Scholarship Fund will provide a scholarship toward tuition and fees for a student from a public Montgomery County High School who is enrolled and will attend an accredited two-or four-year public or private institution. The scholarship will be awarded for one year only and is not renewable.

Criteria:
  • Exhibits high moral character and excellent citizenship
  • Demonstrates a strong faith
  • Be a graduate in good standing of a public Montgomery County High School, Montgomery County, Indiana by the end of June of the year in which the application is filed
  • Must have a minimum grade point average of 2.5 based on a 4.0 scale
  • Preference must be given to students who describe involvement in church and/or youth group activities
  • Be accepted into and attend an accredited two-year or four-year public or private college or university
  • Must have completed a minimum of seven (7) semesters or eleven (11) trimesters by the application deadline to be eligible to apply for the Joseph and Clara Smith Scholarship

  • In addition to the standard essay questions, be prepared to write an essay (300 word maximum) addressing the following: "Describe an experience where you had to stand up for something you believe in. What did you stand up for and what opposition did you face? What did you learn from the experience?"
