A Grant for Life's Final Season

3.19.13

In the true spirit of going "Green in '13" our second Community Engagement Grant went to Oak Hill Cemetery. They are the first cemetery in Montgomery County to develop an area for "green burials." The $1,000 grant will be used to purchase the seed for wild flowers and other native plants to be planted on an 8 acre plot of land at the cemetery.

With conservation being a concern among many, Oak Hill recognized that there is a need for this type of burial. Green burials are limited to containers made from natural or plant derived material, and simple shrouds may be used. All of these steps allow bodies to decompose naturally and become part of the earth. Memorial markers will be limited in size, type and placement so they will not interfere with the natural and undisturbed appearance of the area.
