Scholarship Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently Asked Scholarship Questions

When is best time to start looking for scholarships?

The sooner the better.  Searching for scholarships does take time so it is a good idea to start early and search often.  With the exception of the Lilly Endowment Community Scholarship, most deadlines to submit scholarship applications are in early spring. Eligibility requirements and deadline dates may vary from year to year, so be sure review the details carefully.

Do I need to wait until I am accepted for admission before I apply for scholarships?

No.  You can apply for scholarships while making final decisions about your education.  However, you will have to be enrolled to an accredited college or university before the Montgomery County Community Foundation can pay an award.

Do I need to submit a FAFSA to be eligible to apply for scholarships?

Not unless it is specifically requested. MCCF does not request the FAFSA for those scholarships that contain financial need as a criterion.  MCCF requests a copy of the first two pages of your parents’ and your tax return to demonstrate financial need.  Please black out social security numbers.

May I apply for more than one scholarship at a time?

You are encouraged to apply for all scholarships for which you meet eligibility requirements.

May I receive awards from more than one scholarship?

Yes.  It is possible, and acceptable, to receive multiple awards.

Will I be notified when my application is received?

Yes, you will be notified that your application has been received.

What happens after my application is received?

Once the deadline has passed and all applications are processed, the MCCF scholarship committee will review and evaluate your application according to the criteria established for each scholarship.

How will I be notified if I receive a scholarship?

If you are selected as an MCCF Scholarship recipient, you will be notified of your award at your school’s senior honor/award night.  Montgomery County High Schools’ senior honor/award nights are held in May each year.

If I receive a scholarship, how do I claim the award?

The award letter that you will receive at senior honor/award night will give you specific instructions for claiming your award.  In the majority of the cases your award letter will also contain an Acceptance Agreement that must be signed and returned to Montgomery County Community Foundation no later than June 15.  Once your acceptance agreement has been approved and processed, an MCCF check will be requested for your scholarship award.  The check will be issued to you and the school that you will attend and mailed to your home address during the last week of July.

Are Montgomery County Community Foundation Scholarships renewable?

Many MCCF scholarships are renewable.  Please refer to any scholarship’s profile page on the MCCF web-site (www.mccf-in.org) for renewal requirements.

How do I apply my scholarship award?

MCCF scholarship awards are to be applied toward tuition and fees.

Where can I go to school?

Most of the MCCF scholarships are for students attending a college or university anywhere in the United States, unless otherwise noted in the scholarship profile. Several of the MCCF scholarships are designated for students attending an Indiana institution.

Should I write thank-you notes?

Yes - if you receive a scholarship made by a specific donor, send a thank you to that donor.  Also, if appropriate, keep the donor informed of your progress.
