Volunteerism is critical to many of our nonprofit agencies and our community is fortunate to have so many dedicated individuals who give unselfishly of their time and talents to those in need. Since 1996, The Montgomery County Community Foundation has honored these individuals through our annual "Volunteer of the Year" award. The purpose of this award is to honor someone who has made exceptional contributions to the community through their volunteer efforts.
Nominations are sought from nonprofit agencies in the community. Once nominations are received, a select committee from our Board of Directors reads the nominations and ranks them according to criteria that includes details of the individual's volunteer activities, description of their history of service, longevity of service, role within the organization and an explanation of why this individual should be named "volunteer of the year." The winner is honored at our Annual Meeting (we try very hard to surprise them!) and the agency nominating the winner receives $1,000 in the volunteer's honor.
The 2011 MCCF Volunteer of the Year is Isobel Arvin! She was nominated on behalf of the Christian Nursing Service. There were sixteen outstanding nominees, each making significant contributions to their respective organizations and the community, which made the choice especially difficult to make. Isobel has made multiple contributions to local organizations including the Thrift Shop, the public library, and the Women's Legacy. However, her extensive work with the Meals on Wheels program through the Christian Nursing Service led her to be selected as this year's recipient.
This year, for the first time, we added a Youth Volunteer Award. We had six outstanding nominees with each making significant contributions to their respective organizations. As with the adults, the choice was difficult to make. We are happy to announce that the 2011 MCCF Youth Volunteer of the Year is Legend Johnson! She was selected as the winner for her work through Teen Court and Youth as Resources through the Youth Service Bureau.
